The Perfect Caper and Su Casa Mexican Restaurant are holding a fundraiser for the EARS Animal Rescue Sanctuary from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 5 at Su Casa, 121 E. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda.

There will be food from both restaurants, indoor and outdoor dining, live and silent auctions, and entertainment by Valerie Sneade with Michelle Kasanofsky and Michael Haymans.

Proceeds will go toward the planned new "Care for Life" sanctuary that EARS is developing on 25 acres on Kings Highway in DeSoto County. The sanctuary will ultimately house up to 2,500 health pets, according to organizers.

Tickets may be purchased at all Sun newspaper locations, at Salty Paws in Fishermen's Village, and at EARS in Englewood. Cost is $50 per person. For more information, call 941-475-0636.

Carla Nickerson knew she had a thing about Ghana. For the past eight years, she has traveled to the African country â€” including on her honeymoon â€” because she felt drawn there. With each succeeding visit, she felt more and more of a blood connection.

On one of her trips, she toured a castle in Cape Coast, where African Americans were imprisoned while awaiting transport during the transatlantic slave trade that spanned the 16th to 19th centuries.

Five months after her husband's sudden death, Candice White has found that a birth certificate may be enough to send a polygamist to jail, but it is not enough to get his children Social Security benefits.
And while White was a plural wife, her situation applies to any unmarried couple who have children together - a category that includes 39 percent of the nation's 4.9 million unmarried, opposite-sex couple households.
White was the second wife of Gary D. White, who died five months ago at age 56. She asked to join his family in 1990, when she was 18 and he was 40, a union supported by his first and legal wife. There were some initial adjustments, White said, but "the marriage was great."
Some years, the women lived apart; other years, the family lived together in one home.

COVINA - Police arrested five men Wednesday after officers discovered they were in possession of stolen information, officials said.

At about 4 p.m. John Chiaramonte, 24, of Covina, Edmundo Favela Jr., 20, and Brian Ashby, 25, both of Azusa, were taken into custody after being pulled over for a traffic violation.

Covina police Detective James Rochford said an officer searched the vehicle and found three people inside the car to be in possession of stolen mail, checks and personal information belonging to others.

Rochford said early Thursday Jonathan Bright, 20, of Covina and Christopher Martinez, 18, of Azusa were arrested after one of the suspects gave police more information.

All five suspects face charges of possession of stolen information and identity theft.

BEIJING: The family tree of Confucius, the revered Chinese thinker and educator, will number 1.5 million, including women, who are included for the first time in the updated version.

"More than one million descendants of Confucius will be added to the family tree in this update. Women members will be recorded for the first time," said Kong Dehong, a Confucius descendant directing the fifth update of the family tree, at a festival commemorating Confucius in his hometown -- Qufu in east China's Shandong province.

Kong said the job of registering new members has been more or less completed. The new family tree will be edited and printed in 2009, on the 2560th anniversary of the birth of the famous sage.
